For the longest time, I've had a very silly song of unknown origin called "Moscau" on my hard drive. I wasn't sure what language it was in, or what the lyrics were other than that they were singing about Moscow in a rather discoy, mock-Russian way. Well, thanks to a commenter on my Disco Moscow post I have more info (thanks Greg!).
The artist is a German band called Dschinghis Khan. The song is Moskau, track number 1 on their 1979, self-titled album. The lyrics (local mirror, poor Babelfish German-to-English translation) seem to praise Moscow. I'm still a bit unsure if it's sarcastic or not, particularly as there are lyrics like:
Come we dance on the table
Until the table breaks down
Whatever the case, there are traces of the group on the web:
If you'd like to know more about Dschinghis Khan please visit our website www.dschinghis-khan.de. Unfortunately only in German so far, but we're working on it.
As for the song "Moskau" or "Moscow": It's not meant to be sarcastic at all. The song was intended to accompany the 1980 Olympic Games in the capital of the then UdSSR but didn't make it there because of the boycot of the Games by the Western nations due to the Russians invasion in afghanistan.
It is a song to show the brighter sides of Russian life and has no political intention whatsoever.
Hope I could help you. Jo Beyer
Re:
Ah, thank you! I hadn't seen your site.
Good to know that the song wasn't political.
It's strange to see bios and out-of-costume pictures of a group that has been mostly a legend. I guess that's the fun of it :-)
Re:
Thanks Jo, I wasn't aware of that. Since I was born in farmer USSR too, I knew this song was forbiden due to "Its political background". Since I did not understand Greman that time, I had to believe to the soviet madia, that song "Moskau" is spreading thread and violance against USSR. I even remember a piece of translation they made and it was like "Moscow has been never destroyed but will ..." I like Dscchinghis Khan since my childhood and still do.
Does anyone have any information if the song is actually composed by the band or if it could be a trad. Russian folksong or something, as it sounds really slavic...
Re:
Well, unless Russians traditionally sing in German, I doubt it. I'm pretty sure it's Dschinghis Khan's original work.
Re:
The song is composed by Ralph Siegel, the lyrics are by Bernd Meinunger, Siegel's long-time companion. Siegel is a German composer who has written a lot of hits. He tries to get to the "Eurovision Song Contest" with his songs almost every year, although he never reached the top 10 in the last years. His "golden years" were the 1970s and 1980s. He's the "father" not only of Dschinghis Khan, but also of Boney M (nice songs: Sunny, Daddy cool...).
Basically he writes his songs, then forms a band out of strange people (or looks for a single singer) and let them (or her/him) play/sing his songs at the Eurovision Song Contest.
I don't like him as a person, but I must say that some songs are very catchy, especially when you're totally drunk and want to party (Sunny, Moscow, Fiesta Mexiana...)
Re: Boney M
Just one comment at Phil: Ralph Siegel has nothing to do with Boney M. The producer behind Boney M. is in fact Frank Farian, the same one who brought you Milli Vanilli. The "lip-sync scandal" was an American thing by the way. Over here it was well known and accepted that "producer music" is created in studios performed by models who aren't necessarily involved in creating the music. That was true for Boney M. too.

There's actually an english version of this song out there because I had it at one time. I lived in germany for a few years and people adore this song. it's a HUGE club favorite.
Re:
Dude, I must find a copy of that. Apparently this video was talked about on Boingboing today, so perhaps there will be some more resurfacing of other bits relating to it.
Re:
I first heard this song when my boyfriend from Dresden was singing it when he'd had a few drinks ;)
It's an 'Ohrwurm' - really gets stuck in your head!
For the lyrics in english, go here: http://www.transbuddha.com/index.php/weblog/extended/dschinghiskhan/
For the video, go here: http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=6287
If you want the song, just search for moskau.mp3, it can be found on many sites for free, and some for pay. If you can find the english one, please let me know, I'd like to get it again. In fact, I probably still have it, I just have no idea where it is.
There's even a russian version of it, although, the german one is BY FAR the best one out there.
I can't remember where the website is for that one, although, it's not so hard to find. Again, search for moscow.mp3 (the english way to spell it this time), and you should be able to find it on a site that is in russian.
Hi there, sorry for replying this late in the conversation. I just ran into your site. Nicely done (BTW). I think Dschingis Khan was a "designer band" with a production team behind it. As I got it they were founded to compete in one of the yearly Eurovision Song Contests.
I once heard an instrumental version of it, and the orchestral production sounded different, too. Anyone knows the versio nof that song?
Moskau was even translated and re-recorded by several finnish artists and became a huge succes in the late 70´s. Weird isnt it. Though the artists changed Moscow to Volga, and added sum humour to it. yeah, we all need more songs like this ;)
I found the English version of the song! It is located here: http://www.dazedweb.com/misc/Moscow-GenghisKhan.mp3
You all must give me a dollar.
I found a heavy metal version of this song at http://moskau1979.ytmnd.com/ but it's only a small clip.
It seems as though this link http://www.dazedweb.com/misc/Moscow-GenghisKhan.mp3 is now dead, does anyone know where i could find the english version?
I got the Enlgish Version. It can be found right here: http://home.ripway.com/2005-6/330355/Moskau(EnglishVersion).MP3
(Please try not to go to the link too much; after so many hits, the link will close)
You may now shower me with gifts.
hey i just discovered this song. but all the english links seem to be dead. is there maybe just one more
I've got the English version up here: http://rapidshare.de/files/5571877/Moscow.MP3.html And the Russian version here: http://rapidshare.de/files/5229573/Moscow__Russian_.mp3.html
The links are good indefinately. Assuming at least 1 person downloads it a month, which I doubt will be a problem.
I first heard this tune at my school music camp. It's a tradition at the end of the disco held there, they play moscow, and everyone makes a circle and does the russian can-can sorta dance thingy... blah!
Thanks to this blog, i worked out it's real name (as the qualitity of the tape that moscow is on, you can't tell its german).
I even worked out how to play this tune on the keyboard. How bored am I?
http://rapidshare.de/files/5229573/Moscow__Russian_.mp3.html - is not original song in Russian, but rather a parody of the original song. It is pretty recent, mentioning Putin and other current (?) Moscow funny stuff. I don't have time to translate all lyrics though. :)
Actually, there were at least couple original song parodies within Soviet Union in 1980's too. Mostly with political anti-Soviet bent: "Nobody will come to Moscow, everybody will boycott (the Olympics)", "We'll bomb (the city) and build lagerya on top of Kremlin ruins" and so on. :)
Brilliant guys. Love the links. Had been looking for the english version for some time. First time I've used rapidshare - a wonderful invention!
Re:
Rapid Share wont let me download the english version! Could someone semd me another link for it? or mail it me?!
Just ask for Moscow Lyrics and then it's by ghengis Kahn instead of dsigingis kahn.

Hi! Is any one know were I can find video Kabaret duet Akademy song is "I'm mad at you" or "Ya na tebia obidelas'"? I only saw it once on MTV, and I loved it!
The english version is sung by a band called "Brazilian Genghis Khan", from Brazil.
I gotta say this song is the most catchy tune in the world. Pretty much every time online games or communities allow uploading of music to compliment an animation or something, SOMEONE will make an animation for this. It's pretty funny!
Does anyone where I can download the video? (German Version will be fine)

This a german blog where you can find the original version in german, just click on "Moskau" and download. Plus you can find an AMV involving this song in youtube, the anime is bleach and it's very funny ^^ Enjoy
Hello all.
Whatever you need you can download using Peer2Peer software (shorter P2P, like e-Mule, LimeWire, BitComet, DC++...). Just input the name of file (song, video...) in search field and that software will find everything what is connected with that query (mp3, mpeg... types of files). Just right click and download.
It is not possible that "today" someone can not find .mp3 or video file on Internet, using Google or any other search engine.
Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia, Europe (www.beograd.org.yu).

Re: Dschinghis Khan - Moskau
Hey, you know I heard that song in a club in St. Petersburg, Russia this past summer. They find it pretty amusing over there. Also, just so you know, the word "Towarisch" (read with the German pronunciation of "w") means "Comrade" in Russian. No music video, however, can compare to the Romanian pop sensation O-Zone's "Dragostea Din Tei." http://mapage.noos.fr/martialro/ozone/video.html (I find the homoerotic tension between the three singers to be particularly amusing). If you want a 95MB mpeg of it, send me an e-mail ayeats at haverford with the appropriate top-level-domain for an educational institution in the US.
Oh, and while we're on the subject of Euro-pop, you should also check out Gunther's "Ding Dong Song" which has the chorus "Uuuhhhh! You touch my tra-la-la!" http://www.funnyheck.com/gunther.html
